Instead of competition...

---Didn't know exactly where to post this suggestion. Moderators, feel free to move it to its right place.----

Lets try the opposite

Lets do a collaborative effort to model/texture/render and or animate a project.

I will lets the management decide if they want to do it and how they would fill it in.

But I can do some suggestions to get the creative juices flowing.

Lets do a development-simulation.
First we need to set up someone as the juror.
He plays the role of the government that decides who gets what.
He is also the one who makes the design-brief.

For example:

1. he issues a design-brief that states that his government needs a fighter that can do mach 2 and can carry loads of rockets.
2. different member poses as different companies ( non-existing ones only please) and they draw all kinds of big fast looking jets carrying loads of rockets.
3. The juror selects the best design or the meanest looking or whatever floats his boat ( brides included )
4.The winning design becomes the collective project.

5. Someone makes a low poly version as a base for the others to work from.
6. Others are free to make changes to the base-plane, all are different-version numbers or upgrades. Or chances to fit new mission-profiles or to correct errors in the base-design. All these things happen in real-life too.

7. The fun part is that people can learn from others how they model something, and hopefully can learn something from it. It can help lift people to a higher level then they could on their own. It also could motivate people to finish a project which is bigger then what they do normally. The interaction between team-members could learn teach some people how to work in a team and how to take critics on their work just like in a professional environment.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob

Thanks for the suggestion.

Its a good idea that may work well on some other 3D forums where there are a lot of beginners but this forum doesn't really have any members who contribute to this forum who fall into that category.

I'd tend to agree with Kevin, Rob.

Having said that: a possible extension would be to do a collaborative animation / short, based on a historic event. Is that something that would interest you?

That is why I had this idea, becuase beginners usually don't contribute to a/this forum. This forum especially because the skill-level is so high. Even I, as a professional modeler, am impressed by the level and body of work.
So any beginner would be awe-struck and intimated by this forum and wouldn't contribute anything untill they feel confident enough.

Also this collective work was meant for people who can model already at a higher level then a beginner. The very idea that different people together can make variations to a basemesh is for most people something completely irrelevant. Who cares that the plane in a picture is not a Bf-109e but a Bf-109f is ? Not your Joe Average, nor a beginner-artist. Usually those who care have a great deal of experience and an eye for detail.
Getting those people together to create something unique would be interesting in my mind.

No worries Rob

I'll leave it up to the other members of this forum to put their hand up for such a project if they wish to participate.

My vote of No is not Mil-Arts stance or position on the idea, but only my personal vote.

I think it's a great idea but the practicality of it is somewhat different. Unfortunately Kevin is quite correct in what he says about the overall spread of contributing members on this site.
Most of us are just too busy with personal projects, day jobs, studies etc to put in the time and effort warranted for a project like this to succeed.
It's a real shame I feel, because speaking for myself I think encouraging the less experienced members here to develop their skill sets is a fantastic idea.
There have been attempts to do this kind of thing with the competitions and while credit goes to everyone who participated we were never able to generate the numbers involved that we would have liked.
I think the lack of responses to the poll bears this out. It's more indicative of people being busy with other things than a lack of interest in your suggestion.

I excluded the idea of 2D because compability in the 2D world is even a bigger issue then in 3D. 2D knows 2 competing ways to get to a finished image , either pixels or vectors. It would become a problem for forming a larger group.... Unless you choose competition between different software programs, then it is possible.
